IMP: Your Java Applets and Web Start Applications Should Be Signed

By Tori Wieldt on Mar 28, 2013Starting with Java SE 7 Update 21 in April 2013, all Java Applets and Web Start Applications should be signed with a trusted certificate.

The April 16th, 2013 Critical Patch Update for Java SE (7u21) will change the launch behavior related to running Java Applets and Web Start Applications. Users will be presented with a dialog(s) that will provide additional information to the user who can choose to continue or terminate execution. For the best possible user experience, your Applets and Web Start Applications should be signed.
What does this mean? Java SE 7u21 will introduce changes to Java browser plug-in behavior, encouraging application authors and vendors to sign code with a certificate from a trusted Certificate Authority. You, as a developer, are strongly encouraged to sign code now in preparation for this release and future releases. https://blogs.oracle.com/java/entry/imp_your_applets_and_web

If your running a 64bit system be sure to download both 32bit & 64bit offline versions.

Note: Make sure to uncheck any unwanted software offers during the installation.

I just updated my other Laptop via Java notification and I found prechecked unwanted add-ons. So my note in my first post is confirmed.

Daniel,

As always, THANK  YOU!  These days it is SO very much easier to keep up to date, because you are always there to remind me  :D

Thanks Daniel for the heads up.

As I already said elsewhere, this update 21 is a big leap in Java security, at least for a while. Logging to my bank is now subject to two step confirmation (the first is Java applet and the second is bank's certificate).

Certainly a step in the right direction, I think.

And really, who doesn't want a free McAfee Security Scan Plus? :D

ME!  ROFL!  :D  I spend enough time removing the preinstalled versions from new computers that my friends ask for help getting set up that I don't want to put it back on!

Daniel, can you update using the manual download next time (I mean download installation file from Java site)? I never had third party applications included.

Pegas, after you asked, I did just that... I got Ask.com instead of McAfee, but it's unwanted garbage either way.

Strange, never had. It has to be down to used OS system or region of download or whatever else ...

Nevermind, no problem to disable any garbage during installation.

I think you are right.... targeted to certain regions, and exactly which garbage may be targeted or random.  I have seen McAfee in the past.. and I believe I have had it try to add Yahoo toolbars in the past as well.

Ask.com is even worse! 😠 It justs confirms what ZDNet posted in this thread.

"Specifically:
  • When you use Java’s automatic updater to install crucial security updates for Windows , third-party software is always included. The two additional packages delivered to users are the Ask Toolbar and McAfee Security Scanner."
