Over the weekend, European electronics manufacturer, Lacroix Group, fell victim to a ransomware attack that forced staff to temporarily shut down several facilities to prevent further damage. At present, officials expect the system restoration to be completed by early next week, though the attack's overall extent is still unclear. While the three affected sites are responsible for 20% of their global production, this attack occurred on a slow week for the company and should not have a major impact on their supply chain.
Cyberattack halts printing of Philadelphia Inquirer
Recently, officials for the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper had to stop publication on the Sunday Edition after discovering some suspicious activity on their internal network. It has yet to be determined who is responsible for the attack or if any customer or employee information was compromised, but staff are working with law enforcement to complete the investigation. As one of the longest running news publications in the US, this is only the second incident to cause a disruption to physical printing in over 200 years.
Fake ChatGPT apps gaining popularity on mobile app stores
Researchers have been tracking the steady rise in popularity of fake ChatGPT apps that are capitalizing on the recent AI hype to entice users to download their app and charge them ridiculous subscription fees for minimal functionality. By bombarding users with ads on the free version, users are heavily encouraged to pay varying subscription fees which range from several dollars per month to several hundred dollars for a yearly subscription. Many of these apps run very poorly and are hoping that users simply uninstall the app due to disinterest, but forget to cancel the subscription, which will continue to charge them regardless of their app usage.
PharMerica confirms major data breach
Officials for the pharmacy services provider, PharMerica, have confirmed that they suffered a significant data breach in March, which may affect more than 5.8 million customers across the country. The investigation has revealed that threat actors from the Money Message Group were able to access PharMerica’s internal network for two days before being discovered and were able to compromise personally identifiable information (PII) and medical records for millions of individuals. The actors behind the Money Message threat group have also begun publishing the stolen data to their leak site, as they did not receive any ransom payment.
Ransomware attack causes ScanSource service outages
Earlier this week, customers for the technology services provider, ScanSource, began contacting the company about outages they were experiencing with the company’s website and customer portal. In response, ScanSource staff confirmed that they had fallen victim to a ransomware attack and were unclear as to when they would regain normal operations. They have also begun notifying all affected customers across the globe, though they still haven't disclosed which group is behind the attack or if any customer information was compromised.
