One in five IT professionals believe that IT security is an unnecessary expense, according to a survey conducted by SAP security consultancy Turnkey Consulting.

The survey found that 17.5% of those surveyed thought that IT security was an unnecessary expense only undertaken to keep auditors happy. This proportion had increased from 12.2% since the last time the study was conducted in 2012. Only 37.5% believe that it was essential business practice that can deliver ROI.

I am a bit shocked by this article expecially given the events at Target and other high profile cases lately.

By the information there, I would say that one in 5 IT pros are incompetant at their jobs and should seek different employment.

That is my conclusion as well. Surely if they are incapable and found to be unable to keep systems secure they should not be in that business.

To be honest...I am not...based on what I see and hear about in the day job...this is run of the mill.  Not saying that they should not take more interest but they are human after all and to err is to be human...;)

So basically some of these big corporations are employing experts to do a job that they are not doing properly if at all. If that is the case if/when a hack occurs and private info is leaked that company should be taken to the cleaners for allowing it to happen.

Yeah I see this mentality all the time. I had a conversation with a tech who was hired by a company to look after there security needs. He prompty disabled all the Windows updates from all the PC`s including the firms server as he believed MS used updated to spy on users. None of the PC`s had AV as he said he would manually clean infected PC`s (how he was going to detect rootkits is beyond me).

I wasnt suprised when his network got riddled with conficker (on a load of Win XP SP2 PC`s too)
