Stay away from apps requiring deep permissions into your device and data, public/unsecured wifi hotspots and it isn't a good idea to sideload apps. It is safer to get them from the Google Play or Apple stores. Webroot provides mobile protection that has an 'Unsafe Sources Shield' to alert you to secure settings that make you vulnerable.
Also, turning off bluetooth and wifi when not in use can be another safety net.
