In running various scans wirh my anti virus programs of which Webroot is one of  I get broken registries of HCKR and HCHU files and have no idea what they are and read conflicting reports on line about them being good and bad.

Hello and Welcome to the Webroot Community!

It's just showing the registry keys fo the listed files. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724946%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 but can be used for malicious purposes. Do you have an issue or concern?

Thanks,

Daniel 😉

Webroot had picked up some kind of Octoshape thing as a threat not too long ago so I try to keep a better eye on things and my laptop has been freezing up at times and I am just trying to figure out why and if these broken registries have anything to do with it

The CCleaner I use says they are broken and asks if I want them fixed and I don't want to fix a bad thing if that's what they have the possibility of being? I sent a security check request to WR.
Thanks again.

That's normal as the registry sees everything you do as in downloading, installing, uninstalling and many other things but I wouldn't use anything more than CCleaner to clean the registry as more intensive registry Cleaners can do more damage than good see here from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2563254

Thanks,
