I havent read that article but let me say this, when is the last time you saw an IT person who knows what they are doing having one of these "System Tune-up" programs installed? I'd guess never!

Working on pc's is a side job/spare time thing for me,but i can't tell you how many times i had to work on pc's nuked by suites like System Mechanic.How these suites get rated highly by the mags is beyond me.I wound up losing alot of respect for certain mags to their glowing reviews of products without ever mentioning their danger.Iolo frequently mentions you can roll back changes.Well,you can't roll back changes if your system doesn't boot after a restart.If you are concerned about pc performance,find a pc tech friend who's willing to take aloook at things.It can be done remotely and you wouldn't have to lose your computer for any length of time.And most importantly,if you continue to use windows optimizers like System Mechanic,Backup your system first. to an external drive.Always use an imaging based tool.CCleaner as has been mentioned in this thread already is totally safe to use and doesnt have all those background processes running all the time like System Mechanic.

The only tool I trust is CCleaner. I do rely on certain tools by Yamicsoft Windows Manager for editing certain parameters.

Their tool even helped me sort out an "update not running" issue in Windows 10 ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/2tlzy0/9926_windows_update_0x80070057_error/co7n1tt )

Still I dont use any registry cleaners including theirs. Had some bad experience with TuneUp utilities before.

I always advise against editing the registry in any fashion.I encourage people to find a tech they are comfy with and trust and maybe once a year have things looked at.Security software is notorious for leaving garbage behind in the registry which can sometimes cause issue with a future install of other security software.That's the only reason i would ever consider editing the registry at all.
