Hi jhawley

You may want to take a look at this page in the Adobe Support Forums that relates to troubleshooting Reader freezes. It may be of some use to you re. something that you have not yet tried?

Good morning!

Have you tried a 'clean install' of your Abobe software?  You might see if this will help:

  • Uninstall the Adobe software
  • Reboot
  • Run your cleanup utility to remove any 'leftovers'
  • Reboot
  • Re-install the Adobe software
  • Reboot

I know that is probably more reboots than you really HAVE to do, but when troubleshooting I tend to reboot after every step.

Edit: I see ? beat me to it, and with a much better reply.  Excellent link and info my friend!

Yes i will check the Adobe website and yes i have uninstalled the program already but i dont think it is the program itself because when using the program it works just fine it is documents that have already been saved and need to have name changed and that is when the computer locks up or freezes for a period of time

Apologies jhawley...but I am not clear as to exacrly when the issue occurs.  Would you be able to precise exactly the difference in what you are doing in relation to "...when using the program it works just fine it is documents that have already been saved and need to have name changed...".

Thanks, Baldrick

sure so the program itself works fine but when i try to rename a PDF file the comp freezes or delays from letting me rename the file but if i open the file and do a save as i can rename the file is that a little more clear/ sry for the confusion

Thanks...got it now. Have you tried renaming other types of files to see if it is specifically PDFs or is it more general than that.  I have seen reports that File Explorer can sporadically have issues in this area.

One thing that you could also try is rebooting so that File Explorer is reloaded or going into the Task Manager, locate explorer.exe (it will be called 'Windows Explorer' if you are running under Windows 10), right click & 'End Task' and then click on 'File' in the command bar, select 'Run new task', type in explorer.exe and press enter to relaunch File Explorer manually, then see if you still have the issue.

Let us know what gives.

OK, and here are a couple more things that you can try:

1. Repair the Adobe Installation:

In Adobe Reader click on 'Help' in the command bar and select 'Repair Installation' option.

2. Disable Protected Mode

In Adobe Reader click on Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) and uncheck the Option "Enable Protected Mode at
Startup". Click 'OK' and then close Adobe Reader and when you start it again it should not freeze anymore. If that does
not work then reverse the setting so it is back to what it was originally.

3. Set up Privileged Location

In Adobe Reader click on Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) and under the 'Privileged Locations' section Add
either a specific file, i.e., the one you are having issues with or Add a folder where you may store your PDFs, etc. Click
'OK' and then close Adobe Reader and when you start it again it should not freeze anymore. If that does not work then
reverse the setting so it is back to what it was originally.

Hopefully one of the above will help?
