If Mozilla is my default browser, are Firefox Webroot plugins needed?
History: I just purchased Webroot 2015 antivirus package. I was prompted to download a couple of firefox plugins. I followed instructions to download. I selected the 'restart Firefox' button as per installation instructions, and 2 firefox windows popped up. I closed them, checked my plugins, and Webroot was not among them.

I would say 'Yes' as they are an integral part of WSA's protection of you when on the internet; more specifically they form part of the Web Filtering feature, which involves phishing protection utilising the Webroot Intelligence Network and BrightCloud URL filtering technology.
When the windows popped up did you close them or did you click 'ok' on them. If the former then close Firefox and then resart it and if the popups offering plugins by webroot are dispalyed accept the installation. If yo decide for some reason that you do not want them after all you can always disable them via the Addons Manager.

i noticed disabling this addon in firefox causes ff to behave slow and/or disabling web protecting from the webroot control panel. is there not a way to have an option to remove the addon for the user?

If a user would like to disbale the Webroot addons (or any other addons added to Firefox) then all they have to do is click on the Settings button in the top right hand corner of the screen (it is the icon with the 3 horizontal lines) and then select Addons from the list of options displayed. That opens the Addons Manager from which it is very simple (but I can provide instructions if required) to simply disable or even trash a specific addon.

The short answer is - for the Home Users products, Web Filtering is handled entirely by the Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer Addons/Extensions. The Web Shield slider in WSA does not do anything (useful).
