Chrome & Webroot

Do Chrome and Webroot not work well together; do they clash?  I have only AOL Mail open, nothing else is running, except Chrome as my search engine.  Often the computer seems to spike and the fan works hard it seems.  When I bring up the Task Manager, the two processes that seem to be doing anything are Chrome and WRSA.  Every time.  It doesn't matter if I am using the computer at the time, or if I walk into the room after an hour, the same thing happens.

It's annoying and I am leaning towards dumping both.

Anyone have any suggesions?

Thanks.

Hi PegMc1858

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would doubt that WSA is the culprit but rather that it is Chrome. I have just 3 tabs open and I am seeing the following when I look at the Task Manager:

How much memory does your system have and are you leaving nuerous tabs open when Chrome is up & running?

Hello there, if I may add my own experiences to what Baldrick has noted:

On my previous laptop, I had only 4 Gb of memory.  Using Chrome and WSA, if any of the Chrome tabs that were active had video or other memory intense contenet such as Adobe Flash running, my CPU and memory indeed were driven very high as well.

A new (but still used laptop) with a bit more CPU power and more RAM and the problem is gone.

It seems that Chrome, and the various media/content plug-ins, have over time become more and more CPU and RAM intense, and so older computers now have more of a problem keeping up so to speak.  That drives the CPU higher, and thus more heat.

Also, there is a chance that you have some non malicious adware in the Chrome plug-ins.  That ALSO will drive Chrome into using more CPU and RAM.  I would suggest you go over all of the installed Add-Ons and remove any that you do no recognize or need.

Hi PegMc1858

Just another thought to add to the mix...would you advise as to what version of (i) WSA, (ii) Chrome & (iii) the Webroot Filtering Extension you have installed on your system...just wanting to rule out possibilities here.

Thanks, Baldrick

Chrome, in my experience, has problems with "memory leak" as well. The longer it's left open, the more in continues to use. We have Chrome at work on a Nuc used for digital signage. If it's not rebooted every other day we get low memory alerts.

? is correct, I noticed the memory leak as well.

Also, I forgot to note that using the old laptop, FireFox performed much better.  I personally prefer Chrome, but it DOES draw more heavily on system resources.

This may be a case for using a Chrome derivative browser such as Palemoon or Slimjet, to see if their implementations of Chromium is any better than the original...I have seen marked differences, when using both of those, when compared to the straight out of the box offering from Google.

Worth a punt iMHO.

I used Palemoon for quite some time. I really liked it, but ran into compatibility issues on various websites. Despite being Firefox-based, it is still not recognized as a supported browser 😞

Apologies...not sure what I was thinking...I should have stated 'Iron Browser' rather than Palemoon, as a Chromium derivative...doh! :$

And as for it not being supported...well for those interested we have a word around (not officially sanctioned I hasten to add) to allow one to get the Webroot Filtering Extension to work with it, which can be found here.

And we also have workarounds for Chromium derivatives which may not be officially supported, so that they can benefit from the Webroot Extensions...happy to supply these to those that are interested or in need. ;)

Hi Baldrick,

Thanks for answering my question.  I am not a "techie", have no extensions installed, no add-ons that I know of.  I have an older model Dell Desktop with about 2 GB Ram.  Right now I have AOL open via Chrome and this Webroot page.  There are 4 Chrome tabs open.

As an added note, over the weekend I had no Chrome or email or other Internet providers open.  I was using Adobe Lightroom.  Same thing occured as I mentioned in my original post.

I know it's time for a new computer, and am saving for a Mac.

In the meantime I guess I'll just have to go with the flow of having an older computer.

Thanks again!

I agree BurnDaddy, the more it's open, the more it continues to grow!

Hi Baldrick,

For versions I have 9.0.5.8 for WRSA, 45.0.2454.101 (32 bit) for Chrome, and I do not have the Webroot Filtering Extension enabled.

Thanks, Peg

Hi Peg,

I just wanted to add to what David said about removing any installed add-ons from Chrome that you're not using.
You could also try disabling programs from automatically starting in Windows in an effort to save resources.

You can find information on doing this here:

Windows 7

Windows 8

Windows 10

If you are unsure about which programs to disable you can Google the process to determine if it's required for Windows to run.

Don't know if this will help, but it might.

Have a good night,
BD
