Does anyone know if webroot antivirus protects against the new hostage type viruses?

I'm asking about the type of virus where they lock up your computer and hold it for ransom.  They talk about this on TV ads for PC Automatic virus protection so I was wondering if Webroot protects against this.

Hi infinity306 and welcome to the Webroot Community,

I would be leery of claims that any or all of these types of attacks can be protected against.  Webroot does as well or better than any other AV that is available but bear in mind these ransomware viruses are continually morphing to defeat being able to catch them.

That said if you are using Webroot and one of these nasties does slip by it is important not to reboot (which can assist the virus into further morphing) and contact Webroot support immediately.  If caught soon enough they may be able to roll back to a safe state.

As for any files that become encrypted, you best have a good backup policy in place.
Regards,
Dave
