I am so frustrated by pop-ups that just started appearing.  I think the root is Crush Arcade Advertising but I am afraid to use a tool I found online because I'm not sure if it will negatively affect my computer.  Please help!  Peggy

Hi Peggy

Welcome to the Community Forum,

Criush Arcade is a well know non malware application that we in the Community refer to as a PUA or Potentially Unwanted Application, and the popups are caused by the unwanted installation of ad-supported extensions for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.  If this is the case then these unwanted browser extensions are typically added when you install another free software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this adware program.

And as you have discovered these are very annoying.  At best in that they cause pop-us, redirect your browser home page, and other behavior that may slow down the computer and direct ads your way, but they are not actually doing anything bad like damaging files or stealing information. Often they are installed intentionally by you the user as browser add-ons for various tasks such as quick search tools.. but they also come with the result of added annoying pop-ups and ads. Other times they 'piggy back' with other software that you installed, or try to 'sneak' onto your system entirely.

As it happens the maker of the game that is behind all of this does offer uninstallation advice that you could try first and see if they are true to their word and it does remove this from your system.  Instructions can be found here.  If that does not work then read on.

WSA does detect and remove many PUA's, and more are being added, but WSA does not detect all of them. A simple browser add-on with PUA behavior that is easy to identify and easy to remove is not likely to be detected and removed by WSA. Those that are intentionally difficult to locate and remove are. Please see this link for more information regarding Webroot's stance on these annoying programs.

For those that are not detected by WSA, please see this KB Article. It has some easy to follow directions on locating and removing PUA's. You may also want to submit a Support Ticket, especially if you cannot remove it easily from the directions in the KB Article.

For those that ARE detected by WSA, but cannot be removed automatically, you can submit a Support Ticket.  Webroot Support will help you get these annoying 'crapware' off your computer at no extra charge (providing you have a valid/current subscription for WSA), and the additional examples may help to better automatic removal of that particular PUA for all users in the future.

Hope this is of assistance?

Regards, Baldrick

Thank you, Baldrick!  I just unenabled Extensions for Crush Arcade on Chrome settings so hopefully this will do the trick!  I actually couldn't find the program to uninstall it so I followed the instructions for Chrome.  I am hoping that this stops the annoying pop-ups!  Thanks again, Peggy

Hi Peggy

Well, that is a start and good news...it should stop the popups.  What is more annoying is that you cannot find the uninstaller so as to be able to rid yourself of the critter completely.

Sometimes such 'crapware' installs itself under different names so it may be worth taking another look under the Control Panel > Uninstall a Program, and check out any other recently installed suspicious programs.  If you spot anything that looks remotely suspicious or was installed around the time that you started getting the ad popups you can uninstall them and hopefully that will rid you of the Crush Arcade for good.

Any doubts in terms of what constitutes a suspicious program do please come back here and we can try to offer an opinion.
