Hello ?

Welcome back to the Webroot Community.

What you are seeing and describing is what we on the Community refer to as a PUA. (Potentially Unwanted Application)These are very annoying at best in that they cause pop-us, redirect your browser home page, and other behavior that may slow down the computer and direct ads your way, but they are not actually doing anything bad like damaging files or stealing information. Often they are installed intentionally by you the user as browser add-ons for various tasks such as quick search tools.. but they also come with the result of added annoying pop-ups and ads. Other times they 'piggy back' with other software that you installed, or try to 'sneak' onto your system entirely.

WSA does detect and remove many PUA's, and more are being added, but WSA does not detect all of them. A simple browser add-on with PUA behavior that is easy to identify and easy to remove is not likely to be detected and removed by WSA. Those that are intentionally difficult to locate and remove are. Please see THIS LINK for more information regarding Webroot's stance on these annoying programs.

The best thing to do is to submit a Trouble Ticket and ask Webroot Support to take a look and remove these for you.  There is NO CHARGE for this for valid WSA license holder.

I hope this info helps,

BD

You're welcome ?

While sometimes it is possible to remove PUAs easily yourself, other times they can be quite difficult and may require changes to the registry or other sensitive areas of your computer. I think it's best to leave it to the experts at Webroot. :)

When downloading software be extra careful to read the End User License Agreement and be sure to uncheck any additional software that might also be downloaded.

I would also recommend a good Ad blocker for your browser ( this will help minimize popups that sometimes can be mistaken for actual Windows notifications, and help to furhter protect yourself.)

Hi stiffbriffman

Indeed, if your purchase of WSA was through Best Buy/The Geek Squad, then they should be your first port of call for outside intervention if you are unable to reid your self of the PUA by your self.

That will be much appreciated as we always like to hear back from members about their experiences, especially in the case of corrective action as it helps us in relation to other users with the same or a similar issue who may come to the Community for help.

geek squad tried, but i have a failing HD, so they wont go any further because they are afraid of data loss.  so until i repace the HD, i have to deal with it unless i do it myself...... which probably wont happen.  not that good at removing things like this.
thanks for the help and replies.  ill look into replacing my HD in the near future.

Hi stiffbriffman

Well, I can understand their reticence to plunge in headlong given what you say about your hard drive. Hopefully you can sort that out sooner rather than later and then it can be dealt with as these PUAs are generally a real bind...a real nuisance.

Do let us know if there is anything further that we can help you with...BD may have some more advice up his sleeve ;)

? i don't know how proficient you are with replacing pc hardware but an easy way of transferring the data is to get a small sata to usb converter on the side when you go buy a replacement hard disk. Then dump the new disk in the machine , install the OS on it and when you are back in business hook up the failing drive as an external USB device and move your data over. It would be better if you do that after re-installing WSA.
Getting such a ( perhaps 10-20US$ connector ) turns the failing drive into a usb device.
Meanwhile refrain from using that disk to keep it allive till your machine's installed again. If meanwhile the disk goes bonkers and dies on you the question is how important is the data on it. If it's vital enough let me know and i may guide you a bit further on that.

Hi ?

Thanks for letting us know what GeekSquad had to say.

Since your in the market for a new Hard Drive I would have a look at SSDs, especially if you have fairly new computer that supports SATA III (6Gb/s). The increase in performance can be significant (10 second boot times, no more spinning circles, programs load instantly, not to mention your Webroot scans will be ridiculously fast) The prices for SSDs have drop significantly over the last couple of years, too. I picked up a highly-rated, 250 GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD for $75 a few months back. I suspect with the shopping season kicking into full gear this week, you're likely to find a similar deal around this time of year. (I've always had good luck with the website that rates it's products with eggs ;))

Thanks again,

BD

Thanks again to all.  Geek squad will replace the HD for free, if i purchase a new HD, so im sure i will go that route.  I just need to find some time to backup this HD data first.  Fortunately, there is not too much on here to back up.   I will definately keep updating this thread a things go.  For sure after TG, maybe Xmas too.
Good to have people like you to help when its needed.
FWIW, i installed that adblocker and the popup hasnt reared up so far.  🙂
