HP and malware
+1I was on the computer, HP advises an upgrade. During the upgrade, a flashing box with the word: Flashing in it is shown. It instructs me to not perform any action until it is completed. Immediately after this. Webroot shows red exclamation point in desktop stateing malware has been detected. Was the HP a scam or malware.? And if so, is the computer now safe? Please advise. Thank you

Welcome to the Community Forums.
The fact that "Webroot shows red exclamation point in desktop stateing malware has been detected" is a good sign that something nasty has been picked up, and the first thing to do is to look in Quarantine (click on the gear/cog symbol to the right of the PC Security tab in the main panel. That should open another panel with a Quarantine tab amongst other. Click on that and see if there is anything recorded as quarantined).
If there is something in Quarantine you can remove it permanently or if you are unsure as to whether to remove or not just leave it in there...it is perfectly safe to do so until you can determine its provence and intentions.
Whether there is anything in Quarantine or not, initiate another scan from the main panel...and if that comes up clean then you are OK to proceed. If it detects something else then repeat the above until you get a clean result.
If you have any doubts about what you are seeing you can Open a Support Ticket, and ask the Support Team to investigate for you...a copy of the Threat Log that WSA creates and maintains will be uploaded automatically withthe ticket so all you need to do is provide a link to this thread and that shoudltell them enough to get going on an investigation.

Sounds like you performed a BIOS update for your computer. I wouldn't be surprised if it was OK and picked up as a false positive.
Really depends on if you got the BIOS update from HP, or you got it from somewhere else.
