I have many Windows Updates that aren't downloading. Can you tell me what might be the cause?

I have been trying to find out why my laptop slowed down suddenly and discovered that there are about 15 Window Updates that say they are "trying to download".  Can someone tell me why that would be and could they be the cause of my slow computer problems?

Hi bizzbee

There are a multitude of potential reasons as to why WIndows Updates may stall or try to and fail to reach your PC.  My suggestion is that you head over to the MS Support site and get hold and run the WIndows Update Troubleshooter...please see here for that.

I have used it on a number of ocassions under Win 7, 8 & 10, with good effect, although it is not 100% to sort the issue but it should be your first port of call in my humble opinion.

I have many Windows Updates that are not installing.  They say "waiting for download".   Is this normal?  It has been 4 days since I've noticed them there and they still say that they are waiting.

Hi bizzibee

Have merged your post today with the thread that you opened on Friday...hope that is OK?

Have you tried the advice that I provided in my response to your Friday post?  If not the please do so, and if that does not work then post back with what the Troubleshooter option I suggested advises once it has been run...it should identify most WU issues and in many cases fix them but if not it will advise as to what it cannot fix and then we can look at other potential avenues to try to resolve the issue for you.

If ? 's advise does not change a thing for you (which i doubt as he's quite knowledgeable ) you could also go & have a look in the %systemroot%windowsupdate.log file for any details why this fails. If you run windows10 opening the file will give you the info that you will have to execute a command in powershell 5 to make the logs readable.

Note that there is another way of running the updates but it requires you have knowledge of powershell. It's up to you to decide if you want to try that one. If so let me know & i'll guide you.

Edit: removed initial powershell instructions as it might scare some people.
