My ASUS laptop screen is going from dim to bright. Is this some kind of virus infection problem?

Have you scanned your computer with Webroot?
 
I personally have never heard of a virus affecting your display, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
 
Honestly this sounds like more of a hardware problem with your GPU or laptop screen.
 
Maybe someone else will chime in with their opinion.

I would have to agree with ?  I have not seen malware do that sort of thing.  It sounds more like hardware.. possibly a failing power supply issue or the AC power cord is not seated firmly?

If I may just add my two pennies worth?
 
I believe that ASUS laptops have 'adaptive brightness' features and therefore, if you have not already I would check on and if necessary disable the adaptive brightness in the Advanced Settings, Display section in the Power Mode Settings, and then see if that helps.
