I am a new subscriber to Web Root. My first month of service was great, But my second month is not so good. It is almost as if my speed has been cut, as my laptop became very slow and sluggish. I first thought it might be the laptop itself, so I brought it over to my sisters a block away where she has wireless router also, and it worked fine. So do any of you techies out there have any advice as to what to do ?? Now I have that 10M service do you think it would help to up that to 20M ?? or is that what Webroot wants me to do to begin with. I am not very computer savy, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

?
Could you elaborate on a few things pls because like this it sounds like i'll have to use a chrystal orb to figure out what's wrong.

1. Laptop brand & model with specs ( CPU / RAM & HD )
2. installed OS
3. version of Secure Anywhere that you run including the release nr...

Have you done any performance tests?? Experts correct me if i use wrong terms

Somehow i don't think it'll be the upload or download speed from your internet as i am on an even less powerfull link and it works like a charm for me

Hello ? I disagree actually but only since your computer works fine at your sisters, but not at home, that should pretty much eliminate anything to do with your own computer.  The next place to look is the Wifi.

  • Is the Wifi router in the same room as your computer?
  • If the Wifi is NOT in the same room, have you tried bringing the laptop to the same room to check to see if performance is better?
  • What internet speed service does your sister pay for?  (The 10 or the 20?)

Hello, and thanks for contacting me, I do not know a lot about computers but here is what I was able to find. I purchased this laptop a little over a year ago from Best Buy. It is a ASUS X551MAV RCLN06 with windows 8.1 4GB memory 64 bit operating system, CPU N2830 @ 2.16Ghz, and thats about all I know. it is a year 2013, I suppose this info is not a lot of help to you, but thank you for trying anyhow.                                                                                              Thanks again, Wayne

Like what ? said it could be that you have a performance issue on the wifi. Did you already try and connect the laptop directly to the router with a lan cable? And does it then still act slow?

Hello and thank you for responding to my post, I am about 5 feet from my router, I really do not know the speed of the internet at my sisters but her router is upstairs, a long way (about 200 feet) from where I was. I just cannot figure out why my laptop worked so good at home the first month, and not the second month. It baffles me.

is your wifi network password protected or not. If not go into the routers admin page and see if there are no freeloaders on your network.

To add to what ? said above,

If you have not tried connecting via a cable connection to the router, it is also a very good test to do.

How long have you had the router?  Did you purchase it at the same time as the computer?  (With age, routers can fail, giving poor performance over Wifi)  You can check this by connecting a differenct device to the router, a tablet, your sisters computer, etc, and check performance that way.

Just to add my 2 cents,

I know this has probably already been tried but have you tried resetting (power cycle) your network?

To powercycle your home network:
  1. Turn off the DSL or cable modem for three minutes.
  2. Turn off the router by unplugging it.
  3. Turn off all computers attached to your network.
  4. Turn on the modem first and let it boot...
  5. Once the modem completes the connection to your ISP, plug in the router. ...
  6. Restart your computer(s).
Sometimes this will resolve connection issues.

Hi Wayne

What I would do is a couple of things; firstly, I would get onto one of the Internet speed testing sites and check to see what exactly your connection speed is...if that is slower than you expect then your WiFi speed will also seem slower...it stands to reason. The one I use an can recommend is http://www.speedtest.net/ ...give it a whirl. Then, secondly, if you are not getting the speed that you believe you should be from your ISP I would contact them and raise the issue with them.

It may be just this and not actually anything due to your WiFi, and it would be good to double check to make sure that the issue is not 'upstream'.

Regards, Baldrick

EDIT: Corrected speed test link.
