My iMac has 2500+ open files and processes running. How can I stop these???

Can you tell me where you are seeing this? What program saids you are running all these files and processes. I don't think this is out of the norm. By default I have read that the Maximum by default, the maximum number of files that Mac OS X can open is set to 12,288 and the maximum number of files a given process can open is 10,240. I believe depending on what Mac OS you are running.
 
So I would like to ping ? aboout this.

I feel so lost on this iMac!!!  Things have sure changed since the days when all we had were PC juniors and DOS.  Everything just ran right on past me.
 
Anyway, I would accept any kind of help you might have to offer.  I am not sure what ping means but if you give me instructions, I am very good at following them.

You are welcome. ;)I can try to help you...I do not have any instructions fo fix these 2500+ open files and processes. Mac is quite different then running a PC Windows but I feel Mac is very user friendly.
 
When I say I will ping someone that means I am asking for their help and/or advice...assistance and the @ sign gets their attention. In this case I am asking our Mac Threat Researcher for help.  He will be back in the office Monday.
 
You have as many files opened and running processes as I do on my Mac. I've owned a Mac for 9 years and I have very little problems running it. Running all theses processes are not harmful in my opinion. But ? will provide more information here for both of us. But as I have said running these open files and processes is just what a Mac computer does. I have never had any issues running all these processes with my Mac performance at all.
 
Have no worries with the System Analyzer which is just a baseline tool and not really designed to be an indepth performance analysis tool.
 
Please look at the Mac User Guide that will help you out with Webroot. Also havge a look here at the Mac System Analyzer
 
Feel free to ask any other questions and I will try my best to answer them in the meantime.

I was able to run the System Optimizer and reduce the open and running files down to 100+.  However, I am no longer able to do anything with Webroot because as soon as I open it and click on utilities, the colors around the WR screen turn red and in the upper right corner of the computer there is an "!" over the WR circle.
 
Since this problem began I can only boot in safe mode.  Every time I try to boot normally, right after it starts the boot process a rainbow pinwheel starts spinning and will continue for as many hours as I want to let it stay there.  At this point, I just want to go on my son's advice (he has had a MAC since they came out).  He says I just need to format the drive and put it back to factory settings.   
 
That would be no problem if I were working on a computer that uses Windows.  I am fairly comfortable with anything I do with Windows but the MAC is a different entity.  It is almost like it is part DOS (which I learned on) with a little bit of Windows added to it.  
 
I am not sure how to do what my son is telling me to do so I will have to go the the Apple guys, I think.  When he told me about it a while back, it did not sound like anything I couldn't do.  However, the older I get the more happy I am to follow the instructions of those who know much more than me.  With DOS, trial and error were no bigger deal than just kicking the computer if it started acting up.  With today's technology, I am a baby with diapers and and need to be led to get the job done.  
 
So very frustrated.  I did want to thank you for you assistance and your time.  It is sincerely appreciated.

if you think you cannot Format or repair your Mac then it is best to have Apple take a look.

I don't know which processes are supposed to be running and which are not but there are A LOT OF THEM.

Because of the way that OSX runs, it will always show a large number of files open.  This is nothing to worry about.

No need to worry.  One of your tech support guys assisted me and there ended up being a problem with my Webroot Software.  He was able to get into my computer, uninstall Webroot and then reinstall it and it has worked like a dream every since.
 
I apologize for not getting back to all of you who assisted me sooner than this, but my father and I just returned from spending 9 days in California with my brother so I didn't have use of the computer while we were gone.  
 
I came home and was very happy to find that everything is back to normal and working at normal speed!
 
Thanks again to eveyone who assisted me in my little panic state.  I would not hesitate to recommend your product, customer service support, as well as tech support.  I am 100% happy with all that was done for me.

Thank you for letting us know that all is good to go now that Webroot has been uninstalled/reinstalled. This does happen and this procedure usually fixes any issues that one may have.

Can you tell me who it was that I spoke to from Webroot community because my software has gone haywire again and I can't do anything with my mac?  
 
The last time I had this problem we were able to uninstall and reinstall the software and I have had no problems since then until day.  No changes.  Webroot just doesn't like me I guess.  lol
 
I would appreciate any help you might have.

We will need support to gather some log information.  You can submit a ticket or give us a call but we will need access to the system to see what is happening.
