My keycode is grayed out. Scammed by ABC tech

My keycode is grayed out except for the first four digits.
I bought it for a 6 year contract and had my computer remotely fixed a month ago by ABC Tech Repair.
Possibly scammed.
When searching on the Webroot--My Account information--I discovered this inaccessible keycode, and no record of my email address shows up when checking for my license with Webroot.
Then I got a $14.99 transaction billing today in an email.  This would be the end of my original 30 days of warranty for the help techs at ABC repair.  I stopped payment from my bank on this.  Should I have my Identify Theft bank department start a search for a solution.

Do you have any emails or printed proof of your purchase and any mail or paper print showing your keycode? Don't waste them. You could gather the payment history from your bank towards this "company" and keep this ready... Why not contact WR support and see what their opinion on it is. I don't know this "company" nor if they are authorised resellers from WR's products.
14.99 seems a bit low for a 6 year contract though so IMO you may have been scammed.

Hi joangolfing

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It sounds to me as if you have managed to get yourself into a 'contract' with ABC Tech Repair as part of which you can use WSA on your system...the reason I say this is I am not aware of WSA providing 6 year subscriptions & if you have been provided with a keycode then you should be able to see the whole of the 20 characters and not just the first four digits only.

This outfit have come to our attention recently so please have a read of this previous thread dealing with them.

Personally, I would say that unless yo are looking for them to provide technical support othert than virus & malware removal then you would be better off seeing if you can curtail the 'contract' since if you purchase a WSA license directly from Webroot you are entitled to free technical support for WSA and/or virus/malware-related issues. But I am not sure how easy it will be to ditch ABC Tech Repair should you want to.

Hope that helps?

Regards, Baldrick

I have stopped payment on my bank account for that company as of today.  Being Sunday, the bank probably won't do anything until tomorrow.  I have that account coming out of my credit card instead of a debit account.

I got an email from ABC Repair Tech refunding my $14.99 (monthly fee) which was for unlimited tech support.  They assured me that this program was now canceled.

I also called their tech support phone number and talked to them personally. They said the keycode is grayed out on the two computers that I have "Webroot Security Anywhere" installed on.  If I had the keycode they said it would let me use that keycode for additional computers beyond the two I have paid for.  Does this sound correct?

The ABC Repair Techs said they control the 6 year contract for my two computers and that is why I can't personally find my Webroot license on the official website.  Does this seem legitimate?

I had negotiated the 6 year, 2 computer software access fee with ABC Repair Tech company.

Hi joangolfing

I would see if you can check as to the 'contract' and what your get out options are before you do anything that might have ramifications for you in relation to a potential breach of contract.

Also, as I stated before, their plan apparently covers or includes "...unlimited support for Virus Removal, PC Optimizaton, Tune UP, Device Setup and Popup Removal", so if you have no need for PC Optimization, Tune Up & Device Setup-related services then you probably don't need the contract as a subscription directly with Webroot will provide the Virus & Malware-related services as part of what you pay for.

I have done a little research for your re. the 'contract' and you should ASAP head over to this page on their website and review; (7). PAYMENTS sub section 7.1 & 7.3, (10). TERM AND TERMINATION, (12). SOFTWARE LICENSES AND THIRD PARTY SERVICES sub section 12.2 & (14). NONHIRING COVENANT, which are the sections of the Terms of Service that contain the term 'termination'.

Just check under those that you do not have to give them formal notice of termination and if you do then how long, etc., and other things such as that...it is always best to check this sort of thing just in case.

Hope that helps further?

Baldrick,  I was able cancel that monthly fee both with email contact and with a phone call to ABC Repair.
My prepaid-- 6 year--2 computer Subscription will continue.  So there doesn't seem to be a scam at this time.

I contacted Webroot online chat techs.  Information gained from them was valuable and informative.
They said there are lots of companies that are Webroot resellers.  They have program versions of Webroot that they control. That is is reason that I have a "grayed" out keycode.

I checked the price of my 6 year 2 computer subscription from ABCRepair with this Webroot chat line.  They offer a non-renewable 3.5 year subscription for 3 computers for $119.99.  Comparing that to what I paid to ABC Repair I am getting a better deal with what I currently have.

Problem of this being a scam seems remote at present. Thanks for the help.

Hi joangolfing

Well, glad that things are a little bit clearer and it loooks like all is well. Yes, there are a lot of resellers about and from what I hear a number of them are none to clear as to their relationship with Webroot/they don't explain what they install and how they interact with it/what the end user on the local machine can or can't do...which is not very good in my book...but that may just be me.

Main thing is that you are reassured that nothing untoward has occurred.
