Print frame disappears

I had Webroot which had expired.  An email attachment, probably with a virus was opened.  Webroot caught the virus but since it had expired it was not removed.  I believe the virus may have been installed during the period when I was purchasing Webroot.  After installation Webroot removed virus.  Now when I go to print pictures the print frame comes up on the screen like normal but disappears in about 1 or 2 seconds, so I can't print.  What might be the cause and how do I fix it?

Hello ?,

Welcome to the Webroot Community.

Please have a look at this info;

There are essentially 3 key areas where this can happen/a user can override WSA.  These are essentially reached, from the main WSA panel, as follows:

  1. PC Security > Block/Allow Files
  2. Identity Protection > Application Protection
  3. Utilities > System Control > Control Active Processes
and once there the user usually has the options to:

  1. "Allow"
  2. "Protect/Monitor"
  3. "Block/Deny"
In the case of 1. Block/Allow Files

If an item is set to:

- "Allow", WSA ignores it during scans and shield actions, meaning if it's a virus that has been allowed, it can continue acting as a virus acts.  Be careful of what you allow in this area and ensure it's something you trust implicitly if you are going to change the status from Block to Allow.

- "Monitor", WSA will watch the item to determine if it is legitimate or related to malware.  It is not necessary to add files into this list or set files to monitor manually unless you are changing them from a Block or Allow status.  This might be useful if for example you think Webroot might have had a false positive on something and you want to check again at a later time to see if the determination has changed.  You could set it to Monitor and have Webroot check it again.

- "Block", then WSA will treat the items as it would detected malware.  It will not be executed, and it will not be written to your hard drive.  Detected infections are automatically set to a Block status.

In the case of 2. Protected Applications

In this case:

- "Allowed applications" are not secured against information-stealing malware, and also have full access to protected data on the system. Many applications unintentionally access protected screen contents or keyboard data without malicious intent when running in the background. If you trust an application that is currently marked as "Deny," you can change it to "Allow."

- "Protected applications" are secured against information-stealing malware, but also have full access to data on the system. By default, web browsers are assigned to the "protected" status. If desired, you might also want to add other software applications to "protected," such as financial management software. When you run a protected application, the Webroot icon in the system tray displays a padlock.

- "Denied applications" cannot view or capture protected data on the system, but can otherwise run normally.

And finally, in the case of 3. Control Active Processes

If a process is set to:

- "Allow" it means WSA allows it to run on the system. It's important to note that if an item is already allowed here, that's because Webroot knows already from seeing the file before that it's ok to allow.

- "Monitor" status means WSA will journal what that program is doing and keep a very close eye on it for any suspicious activity.  Basically it would treat it as if it wasn't already sure about it one way or the other, and it wants to monitor it closely until it's sure about it.

- "Block" means just that...WSA does not allow it to run on the system.  Be very careful about what you block in this area and ensure that anything you decide to block is a non-essential process.  Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for a lot of grief if you block something critical.

Please check these three areas to see if Webroot may be blocking your printer software.

Please let us know if this info helps. If you still need assistance we will be more than happy to help. :)

Hi Roger1

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Firstly on expiry & cover...there is a 30 day grace period between the actual expiry date and when WSA will cease to fully function so as long as the events took place within 30 days fo expiry then WSA should have done the business. Outside that then I believe that you are correct and that it wopuld highlight the issue but not clean to malware if any is detected.

Secondly, as to the missing pring fram...can you advise as to from what yo are printing, i.e., is it from within a browser? And if so then which one? And if not then from which app are you launching your request to print?

I think that a little more information would greatly assist our efforts to help you.

Regards, Baldrick

In looking per your instructions, I seem to have about 40 files blocked but do not know it one of these might be affecting the printer

Hi Roger1

Thanks for the feedback. Personally, I would expect to see a number of files so marked and you are quite right not to touch any setting without understand what the effect may be. If

In terms of the Picture Viewer please take a look at this MS Support thread in case what they are discussing may have some relevance to your issue.

Since this seems to have been caused by a virus or malware, would it help if you knew what Webroot found and quarantened?

I hope we are not getting hung up on the print issue, when it may be something else in the system causing this and perhaps other yet undescovered issues.  Don't know, just a thought.

Was the apparent virus incident within the 30 day grace period followng expiry?  If so then if WSA had removed & quarantined something then it should still be in Quarantine. Have you checked there?

The toher thing that you could do is to save both the Scan & Threat logs and then review them to see if you can detect anything recorded that relates to the period in question? To do so click on the gear/cog to the right of Utlities, then click on the Reports tab, and on the panel next displayed clcik either the 'Save Scan Log' or the one for the Threats Log...both work in the same way.

On clicking on either of them you will be prompted for a name for the file to be saved and a lcoation for that file. Once you have supplied these clcik on Save and the system should open a Notepad window displayingt he contents fo the Log, you shoudl then be able to Ctrl+F and investigate the contents...let us know if you find anything relevant or pertaining to the issue you have raised.

The either post back or contact the Support Team with the details.
