Does my Webroot software protect my computer from Russian ransomware infection?

Best answer by shorTcircuiT

TV ad's are designed, by their nature, to sound like they are the ONLY ones that can help you, no matter which product they represent.  ALL legit AV software protects against ransomware, some better than others.  WSA, i think, protects the BEST due to the following points:

  • New malware is released DAILY. The makers of it change it constantly to update it to keep AV software from identifying it.
  • Other AV software requires definition updates in order to identify new versions of the malware.  WSA doesn't.  Being Cloud based, as soon as Webroot identifies a new variant, EVERYONE is protected right away, without having to wait for a new definition file to be created, then released, and then downloaded and installed.
  • WSA also does journaling and rollback.  In the event that a new variant that has not been identified by ANY AV yet manages to also get past the strong behavior detection as well... Webroot Support is able to help recover the machine and files in most instances. To the best of my knowledge, Webroot Support has a better record of recovery from Ransomware than any other AV.
Don't believe everything you see on TV.  My PC is mainly a remote access program for you to use to access your own PC remotely... they are not even at heart an Antivirus company.  As such, I myself do not put any faith in their claims of such.

Thank you.  The TV ad I saw made it sound like the software from MY PC.COM was the only one that could protect against that scam.   Hope you are correct.

Hi,

If you get any kind of ransomware, just go to your 'Task Manager' and click on the 'End Task' on what ever browser the ransomware is on.
I got hit by two of them in the last year and the Task Manager ended it.

It's best to put the Task Manager on the bottom task bar so it fast and easier to end it.  I use 3 browsers so I won't get trapped by a bad virus that can.
In WIN 10 you have a choice on which browser for your default, just pick one out. I use GoGoDuck,  google chrome and Explorer 11 are my back ups. (look in settings for the default browser list)

there is a test virus website what you can test your anti virus on its called eicar

Whilst the Eicar site is well know it is not really a very good test of one's AV's capacity to detect malware...and that is due to the very nature of the 'tets' on the site.  It will indicate that you AV is responsive but IMHO not much else and the only way to really check is to test it against real life malware samples which is NOT ADVISED and best left to professional.

A better approach is to scutinise the better viewed independant testing sites that frequently publish such tests. But having said that many cannot and will  not cater for WSA's rather unique design philosophy which causes the results attributed to WSA's capabilities to be understated in the extreme.

Unfortunately, until the mainstream acknowledge WSA for what it is and the test become representative and 'fairer' there is no sensible or representative way for a user to check up on how effective WSA is.

But I am sure that the message will get out there fully...in the end. ;)
