I just paid geek squad to renew my subscription. How do I know it was upgraded or still activated?

Welcome to the Community Forums.
From this I take it that you have the Best Buy version...as you mention The Geek Squad?
If that is the case then (1) your credit card is not charged to until your subscription expires & (2) oncd your credit card is charged it can take up to 24 hours for the renewal to become active (but don't worry as you are protected fully by WSA during that period).
Therefore at some point within 24 hours of the date you current subscription expires you should see the No. of Days of subscription reset to 365. You just need to keep checking your Subscription days in the main panel of the application
