What happens to Webshield when IE11 is refreshed?

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
IE11 (32 bit)
Webroot 9 with Webshield add-on enabled (32 & 64 bit)

When a webpage is refreshed, where webshield icons are displayed, the page refreshes and very shortly afterwards the webshield icons appear.

However on a different system (with very little cusomization)
Windows 8.1 Home bit
IE11 (presumably 64 bit)
Webroot 9 with Webshield add-on enabled

When a webpage is refreshed, where webshield icons are displayed, the page refreshes and the webshield icons are gone.

I'm asking because of another issue and wondering if IE 64 bit doesn't fully work with Webshield.

Hi ExpertNovice

Have a similar setup/combo and am not seeing any of the negative behaviour, that you are reporting, on mine.  My suggestions is to open a support ticket and let the Support Team know.

That figures...  Oh, thanks for responding, again!

As I started saying 30 minutes ago, that's strange.  This is a new system with minimal apps installed and default security.

It was then I realized this system came installed with McAfee.  So...
  • Turned off McAfee Firewall and scan.  No joy.
  • Uninstalled McAfee (reboot before and after).  No joy.
  • Uninstalled Webroot (reboot before and after).  Reinstalled Webroot (reboot).  No joy.

I'm on my second day of waiting for a phone call from tech support.  Unfortunately, I cancelled the Sunday call back because the computer was returned on Friday... a new computer was purchased on Saturday so I should not have cancelled.

Support is asking for more (releveant) information and two interesting facts were found.
  1. Per tech support,  If wrUrl.dll is running within the iExplore.exe process thread then you should be getting search annotations. Thus, I should not be seeing the search annotations even in IE11.
  2. iExplorer.exe runs as a top level process when running under Sandboxie but runs under explorer.exe otherwise.

PS.  Wish I had not uninstalled McAfee.  It was uninstalled on the first computer and I had the same issues so I knew uninstalling would not help.  :(   I also wanted to see if there were ever any issues with runnning Webroot with McAfee.  I figure if it can then it should do well with anything.

Hi ExpertN

Thanks for the feedback.  I would say that if you have not heard back from Support in the next few hours do let us know as we can ask that most wonderful of person we have here in the Community...the One and Only ? our Community Manager, to use his mystical powers to check on the progress of your ticket. ;)

In terms of McAfee running with WSA...do not worry that you did not try it as from what I have heard from others who have run them together there are rarely if any issues reported...other than the drag of McAfee on your system when it is not required because WSA has you covered/protected...so I suspect that you would have ended up unnstalling it and sticking with WSA...as most, I believe do.

Regards, Baldrick

Whenever I get a mention on the community, it always makes me think of this :)

I looked up your ticket in the system and I see your most recent reply.  I pinged the person working the ticket and he said he's looking at the issue right now to reply to your most recent info.

Baldrick and Nic,

Thanks.  I did get Support's response, via the website,  Obvioiusly, I do not understand what is meant by "running within the iExplore.exe process thread.  What I think is mean is something like this:
  1. iExplore.exe
  2.     WSRA.exe  (This is the same PID as wrUrl.dll)
but what I'm seeing is something like this
  1. WSRA.exe  (This is the same PID as wrUrl.dll)

  1.  iExplore.exe

Support followup on using Process Explorer.  Emphasis mine.
  • Once downloaded, click Find - Find Handle or DLL, and search for "wrUrl.dll". If you see it running within the iExplore.exe process thread, you should be getting search annotations when performing a Google search for example. If you do NOT see this DLL running within iExplore then the DLL module is being prevented from running within the process. Attempt to run IE outside of Sandboxie and run the check again. You should see the DLL loaded. If however, you see the DLL while running Sandboxie, please ensure that the Filtering Extension is installed and enabled within the browser. This is because the two components work in tandem.
Webroot Filtering Extension is enabled withn the browser so I will argue that it is installed.

The following shows the relationship between iExplorer and wrUrl.dl.  Per Process Explorer there are no differences between Win 7 and Win 8.1.  Red text highlights differences between running sandboxed and not.  So, if I understand supports response Annotations should not be visible on any of my systems because wrUrl.dll is not running within iExplore.exe.

Setup: Win 7 64 bit & Win 8.1 64 bit, IE11
Reality:  Annotations are seen on both systems.
  1. Wininit.exe (a top-level processs
  2.     Services.exe
  3.         WSRA.exe
  4.             WSRA.exe  (This is the same PID as wrUrl.dll)

  1. explorer.exe (a top-level process)
  2.      iExplore.exe
  3.         iExplore.exe

Setup:  Win 8.1, IE11, Sandboxie
Reality: Anotations are displayed on Win 7 but are solid grey on 8.1.
  1. Wininit.exe (a top-level process)
  2.     Services.exe
  3.         WSRA.exe
  4.             WSRA.exe (This is the same PID as wrUrl.dll)

  1. iExplore.exe (a top-level process)
  2.     iExplore.exe
  3.         SandboxieCrypto.exe

PS.  This same issue was seen on two separate Win 8.1 computers running IE11.  In each case the system was out-of-the box with a SATA drive cloned to an SSD drive.  The computer was started, and after running through the configuration (once by me and once by the builders) Webroot was installed and then Sandboxie was installed.  So, it was a fairly clean system.  It is an ASUS so has the ASUS bloatannoyance, er, bloatware.

I think the bottom line is that we aren't going to work in this configuration, due to the way Sandboxie works.

Understood.  Since IE is not going to be part of Win 10 (per Webroot support) I'm hoping it will work there.  I like webshield a lot but also want sandboxie and don't like having two browsers up for the same research.  Also, as Win 7 users migrate to Win 10, they will be surprised at the loss of Webshield.

Godspeed,
Jim

<sniff>  <whimper>

Ok enough of that.

Webshield does not work in Sandboxie executing IE11 on a Win 10 Pro 64 bit system.
Webshield DOES    work in Sandboxie executing IE11 on a Win 7 Pro 64 bit system.
