Continue to backup your computer. Missing updates won't hurt your computer as Windows will still install them again, What hurts is if you shut down your computer in the middle of a update.

If you are referring to Windows UPdate then it should tell you which updates that have failed to update and why; usually an error code is provded and that can be investgated as to the cause by Googling the error code.
If you can provide us with one or more of these then we can look to advise as to the nature of the issue.
