When I scan a brownish/orange screen comes on saying it is infected and that it needs to be removed

WSA show your computer's overall protection status, and as such the system tray icon and the main interface change colors, as follows:
 

• Green — Your computer is secure.
• Yellow — One or more messages require your attention.
• Red — One or more critical items require your intervention.

In you case it does sound as if WSA has detected a threat and most likely Quarantined it.
 
Now given what has happened in the past I can well understand why you are reticent to click on 'Scan' so what you can try to do is to reboot your system and once it is rebooted then open up the WSA interface and click on the 'Scan my Computer' button. That should either confirm the threat's presence or come up Green to advise that there is no threat.
 
If there is a threat detected then you can look in the Quarantine area (click on gear/cog symbol to the right of the PC Security tab in the main app panel, and then click on the 'Quarantine' tab displayed in the next panel).
 
If your system does unfortunately crash as a result of your actions then I would immediately Open a Support Ticket to let the Support Team know so that they can investigate what has happened and hopefully resolve the issue for you.

PS: If I may add that with WSA installed there is really no need to keep McAfee installed. WSA offers far better protection and having in running at the same time just wastes system resources IMHO.
