Windows 10 says both Webroot and Defender are off. They are not. What is the problem?

A tab on Windows 10 has popped up multiple times saying that Webroot and Windows Defender are both off.  As far as I can tell, this is not true. A scan with Webroot showed nothing.   Do you have any suggestions?

Hello there ?, welcome to the Community!

I get that pretty often as well, and it is almost always an error, generated by Windows actually.  When Webroot does an update, there is a few seconds during which it is disabled while installing the new files, and this trips the error message.  I have found sometimes if I do not clear the error message manually, even after a reboot I still get it!  Very annoying.

  • Check in your Security Center
  • Windows Button - Start Menu, All Apps, Windows System, Control Panel.
  • Security and Maintenance
  • Click the drop down arrow for Security if need be.
  • Make sure that Webroot is listed there and shows as ON.
As long as Webroot is listed there, and shows as ON, you are OK and it is just a Windows glitch such as I noted above.

Let us know if Webroot is NOT listed there, or is listed as OFF and we will go from there :)

Hi markon

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If I may disagree with David in this case and say that all you need to do is to check that the WSA icon appears in the notification tray area and that if it does and is Green then WSA is installed and you are protected.

I say this because I find the Windows Security/Action Centre unreliable in the extreme in terms of reporting what is enabled, etc.
Mine says that Windows Defender is active when I know full well from checking the Registry that it is disabled/dormant.

And in fact I would recommend that you ditch Windows Defender as being next to useless if you have WSA installed and protecting you.

As I said...just my two pennies worth...for what they are worth...;)

Regards, Baldrick
