I have set Webroot (product is Internet Security Plus) to automatically scan my Dell laptop (Windows 😎 everyday. The number of files scanned varies from 32,000 on a day to 49,000 the next day then 35,000 the next day, etc, etc. Can anyone tell me why the number of scanned files varies so much?
Hi bgreuli

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I am not sure if you have ever checked exactly what files are created on a Windows system but from my experience the operating system will create a varying number of temporary files and then delete them during the time that it is booted up.  You will also find that this is the case with some applications...just run SpaceSniffer for an example of this...it is contantly trying to update its view of ones disk as a result of this apparently random chnages.

So if that is indeed occuring it makes sense that WSA when scanning will scan a differing number of files/objects depending on what has/is being created/delete, etc. during the scanning process.

Personally , I would not worry about this changing number of files.  If there is an active nasty out there on your disk then WSA will catch it.

Thank You!..for the quick reply. Per your suggestion, I will not continue to monitor the number of scanned files...

Thanks again.
Hi bgreuli

You are most welcome...and to allay any concerns that you may have about WSA 's effectiveness and approach to malware please take a look at this KB article that tries to explain simply how it works.

Please also feel free to ask any further questions that you may have on this or any other subject re. WSA..
