Hi all!
I'm doing a spot of on-line banking with Santander and have had a notice to download their free, on-line banking security programme. They say that it works alongside any Antivirus and that it works on other banking sites identifying and stopping threats that lots of Antivirus software dont check for.
Just wondering if it's a good idea to go ahead and download or would it be yet another unnecessary bit of software!

Hi Linda,
David is correct with having WSA and it's Identity Shield there is no need for TR as WSA's Cloud gets updated always for new attack vectors and protects you from all of these in the picture below TR does not!

It would help to know what the name of the security programme they are offering. My guess is that is will be OK, but I hesitate to state so without knowing exactly what the software is.

OK, I have a bit of info. First of all, the website for the company that provides it checks out as legit, so it SHOULD be safe as long as you are positive that the request to download it was indeed coming from your bank, on the bank's website. (Not from an email)
http://www.brightcloud.com, which is owned by Webroot, reports that it is well trusted and no issues/infections found over the last 4+years.
Here is a thread from SpiceWorks about it. Our current Community Manager Nic came to us from SpiceWorks, another very legit Community, so I am quite willing to accept the information provided there.
The opinions there vary a bit, but in all cases it is considered, if provided by your bank, safe. Many banks are now offering it, and some require it.
In your case, if it is OPTIONAL, you might want to consider trying it or skipping it.
A few users reported web surfing slowdowns, especially when on a banking site that does NOT use the software.
A few users reported Windows problems including but not limited to Blue Screen Of Death. The problems went away following removal of the software.
One reviewer claimed that he found that the software is not as effective as it claims, but also found no problems with it either.
I have found no references regarding compatibility with Webroot. Chances are that it will work fine.
Summary:
It is considered safe, if coming from your bank and not a 3rd party pop-up or email.
It MIGHT cause some web browsing delays, but not in most cases.
My GUESS is that it would be safe, but might need to be removed if it causes a rare Windows error (Blue Screen of Death)
