HP Pavilion can print to the printer, but when scanning the computer generates error messages indicating that the computer can't communicate with the printer.  The printer itself in scan mode says about half the time that it can't find the computer.

As soon as I turn off the Webroot firewall, all the problems go away.

When the Webroot firewall is on, I can scan to my iPad and iPhone using their apps with no problem at all.  Based on my troubleshooting, the Webroot firewall is interfering with the scanning from the computer to the printer.

How can I resolve this problem so that I don't have to turn off the firewall every time I want to scan something to my computer?
Hello NHBandit69

Welcome to the Community!

To check if WSA Firewall is blocking something:

1. From the main application panel click on the gear/cog symbol to the right of the PC Security tab.

2. In the panel that opens you should see to the right hand section on the Firewall and at the bottom of this you should see a button marked 'View active connections'.

3. Click on that and in the panel displayed look at the top window labelled 'Process'.  If you run down the list check for reference to either HP files  that you are interested in.

4. If you find entries check to see if they are (on the righthand side of the window) marked as 'Allow' or 'Block'.

5. If marked as 'Block' and you are sure that they are safe then click in each case on 'Allow' so as to indicate to the Firewall that they can pass.

Note: if using Win8 or above the options to 'Allow'/'Block' are not visible due to the way that MS has locked down 3rd party security app providers who use the Windows Firewall, as Webroot does.

If you do not find then referenced there then you should look under the 'Block/Allow Files' Tab (back in the panel where you saw the Firewall information) and check the list of applications to see if any printer files (HP) that you are interested in are referenced.  If they are check again for a Block' setting but in this case you have an extra setting apart from 'Allow', i.e., 'Monitor', and if yo are not sure about the goodliness of the .exes then I would recommend that you change them to 'Monitor' status.  You can always change it to 'Allow' later if you discover the process as safe but whilst at 'Monitor' WSA logs all their activities and has the ability to roll back anything they have done...should they be determined to be bad.

Hi  NHBandit69,

Good information from the experts has already been given.

I use the HP-8600Plus and Win7 Ultimate 64bit.

I checked my Webroot settings while running a print job and what I found follows:

As was mentioned, you need to check the Active Connections. Look for the HPNetworkCommunicator.exe and depending on what options you have installed, such as ePrint, possibly the HPNetworkCommunicatorCom.exe and ensure they are set to Allow.

Also while trying to print, check the Active processes found under Utilities -> Advanced-> System Control -> Control Active Processes (Tab), and click the Start button at the bottom.  Again, look for the HPNetworkCommunicator.exe, RunDll32.exe, and Spoolsv.exe.  They need to be set to Allow.

Dave
Hi Dave

Many thanks for the feedback and intervention.  This is precisely the sort of feedback we like in the Community as it helps to make more specific the advice that we provide, and clearly no one can know everything that there is to know in every area.

The feedback helps use validate that we are providing the right information, and also improve the information that we provide in the future...so, again, thank you...and hope to see you around.
