Windows update stopped working about the same time as I first installed Webroot.  Could that be the cause / conflict?
Hello there, welcome to the Webroot Community!

Generally speaking, no.  I am not aware of any known issue in which Webroot is causing issues with Windows update.  I have even upgrded from WIndows 7 to Windows 10 WITH WSA installed and running the entire time, without problem, and Windows Updates within Windows 10 are working just fine.

That being said, there is always a small possibility that SOMETHING in your install did go awry, so there are a couple things you can try.

Right click WSA on your System Tray at the bottom of the screen next to the clock,  and select Shut Down Protection

Attempt to launch Windows Updates

If Windows Updates now works, then something is quirky with your install of WSA and we can fix it.  :)

Do a Clean Install of WSA:

  • Make sure you have a copy of your 20 Character Alphanumeric Keycode! Example: SA69-AAAA-A783-DE78-XXXX
  • KEEP the computer online for Uninstall and Reinstall to make sure it works correctly
  • Download a Copy Here (Best Buy Subscription PC users click HERE)
  • Uninstall WSA and Reboot
  • Install with the new installer, enter your Keycode and don't import any settings if asked to as you can set it up as you like once it's done
  • Let it finish it's install scan
  • Reboot once again
Once again, with WSA Enabled this time, attempt to launch Windows Update and see what happens.

Do let us know if this helps!
hi there you can try these steps from the windows website:

I suggest you to place the computer in clean boot and then try to perform the troubleshooting steps provided and check if it helps.

Method 1:

Place the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. You may follow the article mentioned to perform a clean boot.

Perform a Clean Boot

Follow the instructions (Step 1 for Windows 😎 given in this link to perform a clean boot:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After performing the troubleshooting steps in clean boot, follow these steps to return the computer to Normal startup mode.

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click ock.

d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Method 2: Rename the Windows Update download folder

To rename the Windows Update temporary download folder, follow the steps:

a. Copy and then paste the following commands in a new Notepad document:

net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution

ren Download Download.old

net start wuauserv

b. On the File menu, click Save As.

c. In the Save in box, click Desktop.

d. In the Save as type box, click All Files.

e. In the File name box, type “Rename.bat” without quotes.

f. Click Save.

g. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Notepad.

h. On your desktop, right-click Rename.bat, and then click Run as Administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

i. Try to install the update and apps.

j. If the update is installed successfully, delete the Rename.bat file that you saved on the desktop.

Method 3:

Disable the Security Software/Antivirus,  disable Windows defender and check if it helps:

Please disable the Microsoft or any Security software if you have on your system and then try to install the update. You can follow the steps mentioned below to disable Windows Defender.

a.       Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, hit Enter.

b.      Right click on the service named “Windows Defender Service” and “Windows firewall service”

c.       Check if it is started, else click on Start.

d.      Check with the issue.

Important Note: Security software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope this helps.
Hi apertain

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If what David has suggested does not resolve the problem then it is most likely an issue with Windows Update itself...and they do happen, believe you me.

To troubleshoot these please see this article over at the Microsoft Support site. I have used it in the pas and it is quite useful.  The appropriate version of Windows is decided by the dropdown arrow on the right of the main text on the page.

Thank you Sir ? and Prince!

TEAMWORK 🙂
Well, I tried everything mentioned (except renaming the Windows Update download folder - I fear it is above my level of competence).  Thanks y'all for trying to help.  I am convinced it is NOT Webroot that is the problem.

I could not do a System Restore to a point before the problem arose (around July 1, 2015, I discovered) because some of the steps I tried (mentioned below) removed prior Restore Points.  I did remove changes I made since July 1, but that did not help.

I tried Safe Mode and Clean Boot.  I have done CheckDisk, CheckHealth, ComponentCleanup, AnalyzeComponentStore (in Dism from Administrator Command Prompt) - all said everything is fine with the Computer and files! . Yet, these said there was a problem with Update which they could not fix:  Microsoft FixIT, and Restore Health (also in Dism from Admin Command Prompt).

So I guess, when I get a chance next week, I'll either try renaming the download folder, or go straight to a System Refresh (heavens no to a System Reset).  Thanks again.
Hi apertain

You have not mentioned it but in case you have not tried it, and this has worked for me in the past, you could try flushing the Software Distribution Folder.  I have some instructions on how to do this and would be happy to share them if you would like (Private Message me as we do not want this thread turniing into an offshoot of Microsoft Support, eh ;)).

Nice work everyone. I hope the fix is found. Trying to troubleshoot can be overwhelming. Thanks to all for the extended posts. One for all and all for one!

Hi apertain

Any luck with the further suggestion we discussed?  I am intrigued as to whether that worked for you or not.
