And next generation processors, including Intel's Kaby Lake, won't be supported in old Windows.

Intel Skylake die shot.

If you own a system with an Intel 6th generation Core processor—more memorably known as Skylake—and run Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you'll have to think about upgrading to Windows 10 within the next 18 months. Microsoft announced today that after July 17, 2017, only the "most critical" security fixes will be released for those platforms and those fixes will only be made available if they don't "risk the reliability or compatibility" of Windows 7 and 8.1 on other (non-Skylake) systems.

The full range of compatibility and security fixes will be published for non-Skylake machines for Windows 7 until January 14 2020, and for Windows 8.1 until January 10 2023.

So now Intel is being forced there users to use the newer OS's. LOL But nothing about AMD Processors?

Daniel

Well, once Microsoft started others where bound to follow. :(
How can I determine if I am using this?? Did Intel give it a specific name? I am running Intel(R) Core (TM) i3 CPU

Theresa
Check this page and look it it up and mine is a 4th Gen Intel Core i7 4980HQ @ 2.80GHz Crystalwell 22nm Technology: http://ark.intel.com/products/83503/Intel-Core-i7-4980HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-4_00-GHz

Well this doesn't sound good at all! Alot of people will not even be aware of Microsoft doing this! I am not a happy camper right now! But of course by the year 2020 I should have a new computer by then! .
Oh great. I am 6th generation!!:@  I don't want Windows 10 as Windows Media Center is my only television and I will lose it if I update. What happens if the Intel support stops??  Now I'm depressed.

Really 6th Gen and yes you will lose Windows Media Center when (not if) you upgrade to Windows 10. :@

But we are fine we don't have Skylake! I can go to XP Pro x64 if I really wanted to. LOL
This may be a really stupid question but upgrading to Windows 10 won't change my processor so how does upgrading affect the fact that I have a 6th generation processor that will not be supported after 18 months.

A rookie.

That's the thing they want you to upgrade to Windows 10 and it's free for now and it will support Skylake 6th Gen Processors!
Now I am confused as the Intel site lists all of the 6th generation and they all start with i3 CPU but continue on with a dash and a 4 digit number starting with 6xxx. Mine does not list that way. Now I don't know which Intel I have as my PC isn't listed as one that came with a 6th generation. Is there another way for me to find out??

The other info is driver version 6.3.9600.16384.

Many thanks.

Here is the info on your Processor so your good no need for Windows 10. http://ark.intel.com/products/46472/Intel-Core-i3-530-Processor-4M-Cache-2_93-GHz

IntelCore i3 1st Gen ClarkdaleCore i3-530 2.93GHz
You are so smart. I tried for almost an hour on Intel's site and could not find my processor or my PC. I erronously thought it was 6th generation. THANK YOU THANK YOU.

I see now I  was missing the 530 extension

.

Now I can go to sleep with Johnny Carson. :D

Truly yours,

Theresa
? told you a while ago there's a simple solution for you but you feared it as you are not good in installing things..

It's soo easy that i'm posting a sample screenshot of a product that can overcome your TV issue on windows 10

Get one of these that's Windows 10 compatible and then install VLC player... Problem fixed just as fast as plugging a USB mice or keyboard.
Ok, I get the first one is an antennae, I assume the thumb drive is a TV tuner and the last is a remote control. How am I doing so far?? I think that I said I was not thrilled about installing hardware. These look like peripherals. Maybe doable!

Thanks Edwin,

Theresa

P>S. Why does the drive say FM? That's a radio frequency in the US of A
Because it can do both... The image's but a mere example to show the thing Theresa... There are Windows 10 alternatives for Mediacentre but right now i don't have time to dig them up... If you want i do it tomorrow

The antenna usually plugs into the thumb drive which is the actual tuner. The one in the sample can also act as an FM tuner for radio receipt thats why it mentions FM
?

Check here for a few alternatives to Media Center on Windows 10.

Thanks Edwin. Lot of comments on that website. I use WMC to record TVs shows to watch later and to play music for the birds. (I probably have uploaded over 1000 CD's and have made playlists for the spoiled birds.

I can't see where any of those on the website will enable me to do the same things. My PC has a TV tuner built in.

I tend to get lost when there is too much information and that website is VERY informative but I didn't see any mention on your first idea which did sound promising.

Thanks for the research!

Theresa
I just realized that I went off-topic a few days ago and posts continued. @nic should you move those that switched from the Intel 6th generation to WMC??

Terribly sorry. Still getting accustomed to the Forum. :$

Thank you,

Theresa
? no worries as this is the Techie Forum! ;)
