Microsoft Security Essentials Alert

I had a red bordered alert pop up with an alert for Microsoft Security Essentials which said my computer was infected with 3 different virus's one a trojan and two others.  Webroot did not pick it up immeidately, but when I ran a scan it said there were 3 infected files and removed them.  The only problem is when I open my internet it still keeps appearing and I can't close it or X out of it.  Anyone else with this problem?  I keep running my webroot but it says there are no problems.  Can anyone help. I tried closing out with control/alt/delete and shutting the page down, rebooted and went into the control panel/internet options an removed all temporary files, cookies, etc. and restarting again, but the pop up came back as soon as I opened an IE page.  I'd appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Zeus malware re-purposed for tech support

An unorthodox alternative to long phone calls with relatives. A security researcher has detailed a novel approach to tech support that uses a modified version of the infamous Zeus malware. The Windows malware and its Android derivative were hugely popular in cyber criminal circles and best known for its man-in-the-middle keystroke -logging and form grabbing. The malware has infected untold scores of computers causing massive amounts of financial losses. But its many features have now been re-appropriated for good. David Schwartzberg (@Schwartzberg ) began building a modified version of the malware for tech support after undergoing an arduous computer repair task with family. "Just because you have a knack for technology, people you know seem to think that you enjoy fixing all their problems, most self-inflicted," said Schwartzberg, a Barracuda Networks senior security engineer.   Full Article

Problem with my HP Deskjet 1050 printer

Hi,   Pleeeese could you help me out with this printer of mine!  It just wont print.  I've been using it for a few months with no probs but since I changed the cartridges, apart from five or six pages from the web, it dosen't print anything, dead as a doornail.   All the print jobs are queing but one is trying to delete and is stuck, it won't cancel.  I've also noticed that next to it's name on the control panel, it has (Copy 1), is this OK?   I've tried diagnostics which had corrected it for that one time but has made no overall difference.   Can you help?  It's an HP Deskjet 1050 J410 series.

The early build includes a number of changes that Microsoft is making to improve the keyboard and mouse experience in Windows 8.1. The most obvious change is a new title bar for Microsoft’s Windows 8-style apps, allowing you to close, minimize, and snap apps to appear side by side with a mouse. It occupies a small amount of space at the top of all "Metro" apps, and it appears to be included as more of a helpful option for mouse users to quickly navigate through apps. Similar improvements have also been made to the Start Screen, where right-clicking on Live Tiles now produces a context menu with options to resize, unpin, and more. Virus from www-dot-appround-dot-us

Whenever I go to the Intellicast.com weather site, a second tab pops up advising me to go to appround-dot-us and download something to make the PC run or stream faster. I use Webroot anti-virus, which immediately blocks any forced downloads, but I have a suspicion that something might have been downloaded that triggers the second tab to appear. I searched Control Panel, but couldn't find anything.   No issues when not using a browser, but I do get this pop-up when using either Firefox or Chrome. Forgot to mention that the pop-up tab takes me to this web site: www-dot-.mypcbackup-dot-com, by means of this URL:www-dot-lpcloudsvr302-dot-com/725A482A73486B6671742822343A614E.. Sometimes an ad for something called "Lightspark Player Pro" pops up in yet another tab. Has anyone here encountered this virus? Thanks, Roy

Lan over powerline or wireless adapter?

Hey everyone!   I have a gigabit router and download speeds of 100Mbps (on a wired connection). I have a desktop that is 50 feet to the left and then one story higher than the router. I know I can't expect a full 100 down speed without being directly wired to the router, but which of these would give me a faster speed? The powerline adapter where one is plugged into the wall and router, and the second one is plugged into the wall and computer; or just a USB wireless N adapter?   Thanks :D   Shran

Have an extra computer that won't turn on

Hi all,   Your friendly Andorian again 😃. I have a second computer, and it just flat out will not turn on. At all. I don't mean it won't boot up, I mean it won't even power up. When I plug in the power source, the power light blinks orange, but that's all it does, even if I don't actually press the power button, as soon as I plug it in it just blinks orange every second or so. I've checked the bios battery, and all the cables, nothing is loose or missing. Any ideas?   Thanks,   Commander of the Kumari 😃

Hotmail user swamped with thousands of unwanted emails, after Gmail goes down

If you think you receive a lot of unwanted email each day, spare a thought for Hotmail user David S. Peck of Fresno, California. He’s the owner of an email account that received thousands of unwanted messages, as Gmail went down for a few hours last week. As Sarah Perez from TechCrunch reported, a bizarre glitch in Google’s search results meant that users hunting for Gmail could find themselves sending an email to Peck’s Hotmail address instead. Clicking on the “Email” link in the Google search results for “Gmail” took Gmail users directly to a compose message form, pre-filled with Peck’s Hotmail address. In time, Google confirmed that the bizarre bug was not related to the downtime which affected Gmail and Google Plus on Friday, but the timing seems unfortunate. Wi-Fi Password?

Hi'ya peeps!   I've just got a Kobo Touch e-reader (£30 through the Money Saving Expert website!) and have been trying to connect it to the web but don't know which password to use, there is a password and a passphrase on the router and (as instructed by Virgin help) I've tried putting the passphrase (wireless settings) in but it dosen't accept it; not sure if I should try the password (super hub settings) in case I somehow muck things up.   Yet again, any help would be brill.  :@

Fastest ever' broadband passes speed test

The "fastest ever" broadband speeds have been achieved in a test in London, raising hopes of more efficient data transfer via existing infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent and BT said speeds of 1.4 terabits per second were achieved during their joint test - enough to send 44 uncompressed HD films a second. The test was conducted on a 410km (255-mile) link between the BT Tower in central London and Ipswich. However, it may be many years before consumers notice any effect. But the breakthrough is being seen as highly important for internet service providers (ISPs), as it means a greater amount of information can be sent through existing broadband infrastructure, reducing the need for costly upgrades. "BT and Alcatel-Lucent are making more from what they've got," explained Oliver Johnson, chief executive of broadband analyst firm Point Topic. I went to the Automated Agent at the bottom of the home page, and they not only made several suggestions, but they  FIXED the problem. That does bring up a good question, where is the proper place to go with questions?

SWEET!! Hershey's to make 3-D chocolate printer

"3D Systems announced a deal with Hershey's Thursday to collaborate on developing a 3-D printer that makes chocolate and other edible products."   "In a statement, 3D Systems said making printers that print chocolate is a good way to help the relatively new technology go mainstream. I keep getting a pjijtcutre of a camera and scanner on my bar at the bottom.  It says: interactive services detection.  No matter how many times I close it, it pops back up.  I have run webroot several times on several days.  It does not catch anything.    The details say: program or device reqesting attention   message titile: mirosoft visual C++Runtime Library program path: C:windowssystem32spoolsv.exe recived:  today   Any ideas what the heck is going on?

CES - What This Year's Show Had to Offer

The massive International CES trade show in Las Vegas wraps up tomorrow, but most major tech sites have already selected who they think are the big winners in each major tech category. Digital Trends is one such tech site. You can check out their full list of winners here, but I'll also include a few brief highlights based off their selections below.   LG seems to be a Digital Trends favorite at CES 2014, taking top honors in their 'Home Theater (Video)' and 'Computing' categories.
